Network Setup

I am very new to Linux and am Using SuSe 8.1 Pro,
My NIC was detected and I can ping myself and others in the network, but can not cruise the internet, ie www.yahoo.com
domain not found. What modules or programs must be configured for me to access internet, I have used Xyast or whatever the name is and set that up.

Thanks

How is your computer connected to Net?

It seems you are connected to a LAN.
How is the LAN connected to Net?
(Firewall, proxy and their policies)
If you are not the person to set the policies, you might want to talk to the person who does.

if you are connecting directly via a modem and not through you nic, then i think i know what your problem is.
i take it you can connect alright? but you just cant surf or ping your isp's dns server.

Im guessing, when you try to do so, its looking at your default route, and your default route is probably set to something in your internal network (ie: your nic)

initiate your connection and then do a: route -n
and have a look what your default route is set to.

also check your resolv.conf file with: cat /etc/resolv.conf and make sure your nameserver is set up.

i had this problem before, and i couldnt suss it (i hope you have better luck) i just reinstalled linux without configuring my network upon install, and then set it up later.

i hope this is all relevant to your problem?
