Network Services for Dedicated box

I want to host a java web application using resin 3 on a dedicated centos 4.3 box I rent monthly. What services do I need to have running to make it accessible with www.<mydomain>.com and send/receive emails with service@<mydoamin.com>? Do I need to run my own smtp and dns server?

Well, depending on your domain provider, you might need as little as the webserver you will be using and ssh for you to access the box. But if your domain provider does not have DNS servers for you to use or an email solution, then you will need to set up an IMAP and SMTP server plus two DNS servers (you can probably rent it as a service from somewhere or just run two dns servers yourself.)

i think i got lucky, godaddy does provide email and dns with domain registration. my app needs to connect to their smtp server and i assume it can since it is a client, just like ms outlook is a client. they require a uid/pass for the smtp connection.

i didn't see any mention of encryption, would that smtp uid/pass be sent cleartext over the wire?

Im sure they also have SSL/TLS secured connections open for the smtp server.
