Network Servers username and password cache

Currently using Fedora Core 1.

I tried to access my other machine (windows 2000 pro) using Network Servers. I accidentally entered the invalid username and password. So it gave me an error, You do not have the permissions necessary to view the contents of "smb://win2kpro".

I close and reopen Network Servers and try to access my machine again, still it gives me the same error, not allowing me to key in the valid username and password. Have to restart x-windows then only it will prompt me for authentication.

How do I not restart x-windows and clear smb username and password cache?

Thanks :)

To restart X Windows as root run /sbin/telinit 3, this cheanges your current run level to 3, also known as multi user mode. This will shutdown X-Windows. To get back to X-Windows just run /sbin/telinit 5 and you will be back. I'm assuming that you have a graphical login and that your default runlevel is 5. There is also another way, less gently solution, press CRTL+ALT+Backspace(this kill the X-Windows server). As for the username/password it should be cleared once you restart the server. Hope that helps.

Thanks for reply, but i think you get my question wrong. I'm not asking how to restart x-windows but "How do I clear the smb username and password cache WITHOUT restarting x-windows?"

Kind of troublesome to restart x-windows everytime there is a typo during authentication login :(

Thanks again :)

Oh ... Sorry. Then I don't know quite how to solve you problem. What are you using??? Konqueror? Maybe if you restart the program that you use, that will fix your problem.

i'm using nautilus

found out something new. that problem only happens if i specify the pc-name

smb://win2k-svr

but if i specify by ip

smb://192.168.0.1

then i would not have that error. Is this a bug with nautilus?

Did you ever find out the answer to this (being able to use machine name rather then ip?)

linuxzouk 05-27-2004 11:14 AM

sad to say i can't find the solution

now even worse, using fedora core 2 can't seem to make either smb://192.168.0.1 or smb://win2kpro to work

not sure what happened to nautilus

I posted another thread about this - discovered if you put the pathname to the share

eg:
smb://paulscomputer/cdrive

it would ask you for a username and password and then behave properly. It refused to display the shares on a particular computer though.
