Network Restart

Hi Guys, I'm using slackware linux and have a couple of (basic?) questions about the network management. I have dchp set to talk to my local dchp server upon boot to connect to the network and the internet connection (provided by the university i'm at - janet). I want to be able to start, stop and restart the network connection. I'm pretty sure this can't be too hard. Also, with a windows or mac box if the cable is removed and the connection lost then reinserted the system will detect / test for this and restart the connection. Is this possible under linux and does anyone know how to do it?
