network printing
I have a slackware 10.1 server. It has a hp laser printer correctly installed. It will print from the server. It will print from other computers running windows. It will not allow other linux computers to print. I have tried disabling samba, I have tried using my browser to configure at localhost:631 but the connection is always refused. I seem to have samba correctly configured. I have tried manually editing the cups.config but it still tells me the same thing. I can access file shares from linux or windows, so I think that the permissions are correct. any suggestions would be appreciated

Samba has nothing to do with this problem; it's CUPS that you need to configure correctly. On my system, the cups config file is /etc/cups/cupsd.conf.
One easy way to edit this config file on your Slackware server is using KDE's printing tools -- try the command "kcmshell printmgr" from a command line as root. Look for a "Print Server" button and select "Configure Server". Under the "Network" entry, make sure the server is listening on the network; there should be an entry in the "Listen to" box that looks like "Listen *:631", which will listen to all hosts (the "*") on CUPS port 631. If that's not there, click the "Add" button and add it.
Under the "Security" entry, make sure your printer is listed in the "Locations" box; if not, add it. Check that any host can print -- select your printer in the "Locations" box, click the "Edit" button, and make sure there's an entry like "Allow from All" in the "ACL addresses" box. If not, add it; you can restrict which hosts can print by adding something like "Allow from 192.168.1.100" or "Allow from 192.168.1.*".
When you're done, keep clicking the OK button. Restart your CUPS server, and hopefully everything should work. Good luck.

Thanks for your reply. I have done what you suggested but I still am getting a refusal to allow printing under linux. I can print from all the other windows computers, but not the linux machines. I have each user listed in my hosts file along with user name added for the server and for samba. I keep getting connection refused. I may try a fresh install with the new 10.2 and see what happens. Have you ever used webmin? I have been tempted to try it but I really hate loosing control of my machine. You never know what is happening behind the curtain.

Have you set up CUPS on the client machines?

Thanks for your reply,
Yes I did set up cups, but I think I found the problem. I must have set up the firewall so tight in iptables, that I am not allowing anyone thru the nessesary port to get to the printer. Samba must be able to bypass this. Since I changed the firewall script I can not access the home directories from linux either. I'll have to study up on iptables.
