network ping issue with my fedora9 & ubuntu8.04

Hi everyone,

I got an network ping issue with my fedora9 & ubuntu8.04 linux systems for a long time, and I still can't figure out the problem.
Let me explain my setup
i have totally 50 system connected with the netgear router (DHCP enabled)
Ubuntu 8.04 desktop -35 systems
Fedora 9 desktop - 5 systems
Windows XP pro -10 systems

All my machines (Windows and Linux) are connected into the netgear Router.

Everytime I try to ping any of the linux system by name from my windows system i am getting the following error

Ping request could not find host ckuser58. Please check the name and try again.

However, I can able to ping by the IP address, and it works just fine.

can any one help me to solve this issue

Isn't that a DNS problem?

That problem isn't in linux. It's in Windows XP. You need a WINS server. Windows uses that so it can access hostnames in the local area. This is included in Windows Vista/Windows 7. For windows xp you should edit C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\hosts I think. If it's not in that dir try searching for the file "hosts". In that file you can add IP and Hosts. So if you ping "server" you'd receive ping from (for example) .

fedora 9, network, ping, ubuntu804
