Network Permissions

I'm using Samba to access my Linux Mandrake 8.1 box from my Windows XP box, and I'm accessing my Windows box by using the mount -t smbfs command. This all works very good except I can only write to my Windows box if I'm logged on as root, and the Linux system will not let me change the permissions on the folder that mounts the Windows files. The folder is owned my root, and when I try and change the owner or group I get a message that I have insufficient privileges to make the change, even though I'm logged on as root. I even created the mount folder as my regular user, but when I mounted it with the mount -t smbsf command root became the owner.

Thanks
