Originally posted by kc8tbe OK... I'm having trouble guessing my ISP's nameserver's IP address and DHCP still isn't working. How can I determine what IP to use as a nameserver?
Also, any idea what that error from lpd means?
Call your ISP or search their homepage for information. Most have help sites for their services.
lpd error ? lpd is your printing daemon.. don't remember reading anything about an lpd error.
The nameserver you specified seems to be overloaded. I use 3 (+my own one):
nameserver 194.204.152.34
nameserver 194.204.159.1
nameserver 213.241.5.3
They're in Poland, so they may be a bit slow for you. Ping them all, choose the best one and use it. You'll have WWW access so you can search for ones closer to you.
Just to recap:
The problem - an active network, but no internet (not even by IP) - was initially caused by the router thinking that my computer was something it wasn't. My computer's name was "localhost". My router thought it was "Jack". Changing the computer's hostname to "Jack" solved that problem. Because DHCP wasn't working (still isn't) it was nescessary to manually assign my computer an IP address and gateway (ifcfg-wlan0) and nameservers (resolv.conf). After this was done, everything started working fine.
Thanks again - you guys are great! I haven't heard from Mighty_Viking though - you still out there?
hi im back , sorry had a HD crash.
Im using Debain Woody!
to activate my network i have to run these commands:
ifconfig eth0 192.168.0.6 netmask 255.255.255.0 up
route add default gw 192.168.0.1 dev eth0
is there anyway that these commands are loaded automaticly on startup?
The Gateway is a D-link router!
I can ping my the DNS servers from the ISP, but i can't start the internet.
It's the most straight forward guide I've seen for this type of problem - internet masqerading, NAT, routing, etc. I use a cable provider to connect - it worked first time for me!
