Question Network Manager shows disabled but I am still online.

Hi.

My Network Manager shows that networking is disabled but I am still online. How is this? I use a USB wifi adapter on my Desktop PC. The 2nd image attached is my upload rate in Transmission.

Network manager doesn't manage all interfaces. It ignores those in /etc/network/interfaces. You have a dongle but you probably have an internal network card as well. You can find out what network interfaces you have by using ifconfig or ip link show.

Hi hazel.

I only ever use my WiFi to access the internet. My PC is upstairs and the wireless router is downstairs so an ethernet cable is not feasible. My Ethernet NIC is never used.

I physically disconnected the dongle and reconnected it. Now all is back to normal.

Code:
This file describes the network interfaces available on your system
# and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5).

source /etc/network/interfaces.d/*

# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

instead of relying on what your browser tells you, do some proper tests.
set your nm-applet to disable networking, then try:
Code:
ip link
ping 8.8.8.8
ping archive.org
etc.

Hi ondoho. I know of ping but I was definitely online and not using cached webpages. It seemed to be just a weird anomaly.

Hi nini09. As I said in post #3, the issue is gone after I removed and reconnected the wifi adapter.

I am online right now and this is what I get.
Code:
$ nmcli connection show --active
NAME UUID TYPE DEVICE
ETC-Public e541855b-65d1-4a19-b72e-ff2b3deec949 802-11-wireless wlo1
And WOW there it is. It looked blank in the terminal.
Checked the profile colors and the dark grey defaults to black which does not show on a black background.

Huh, that was an easy fix. At least for me.
