Network issue SuSE 9.2 on Dell Opti GX260

I have SuSE 9.2 installed on two Dell Optiplex GX260 PCs (With the Gigabit Ethernet card).

I set the IP Address on both to be within the same subnet (a. 192.168.1.2/24 and b. 192.168.1.3/24) and tried to ping eachother to no avail. I tried setting the IP addresses both using YaST and using the ifconfig command.

I then did a tethereal -V on both machines and from each machine I could see the ping ICMP requests from each side. So it appears the packets are getting to the respective ethernet cards but not getting to the from the Ethernet card to the TCP/IP stack.

any ideas .....
