Network gets lost and needs to be reset

Hey i have a really weird setup at my house. I have my cable and wireless router up stairs and my server is downstairs. now i have an access point downstairs connected to my router upstairs and another switch connected to the access point, now my server is connected to this switch. however whenever the connection from my access poitn temporarily resets itself, my server loses its connection and non of my other computers can access it. i need a way to be able to see if it has lost its connection to the outside world and then automatically reconnect it.

Right now i have a cron job running that just does a little ifconfig up down on my connection every few hours. but i want something dynamic that knows instantly that the connection is gone and then fix it without me having to worry or get upset that the connection is out and i have to either bring a monitor down and login or just reset the machine because i dont to get a monitor.

does any body have an idea how i can tell if my connection has gone and died? and be able to tell dynamiclly without a timer to reset it?

thanks

My first idea would be to avoid having an important server wireless connected ... Else, couldn't the server monitor itself: detect lost connection and attempt to reconnect?
