Question Network constantly disconnecting and reconnecting

My linux ubuntu 12.10 is connected to the internet via a wireless network generated by a Netgear wireless router. Recently, the linux machine has been disconnecting from and reconnecting to the network about once a minute. The network requires a password, and I am asked, though not always, to authenticate the network by submitting its password.

Can anyone tell me how to stop this behavior? Thank you very much.

tcnm, I'm no wireless expert, but a couple of thoughts on your problem are:

1: How old is your wireless equipment (adapter and router/access point)? I've seen the wireless gear in routers and AP's simply fail from extensive use more than once. Usually in my experience somewhere around 4-7 years of constant use. I've seen this type of failure present as randomly dropped connections that increases in frequency over time until total failure of the device.

2: Some types of wireless hacking entail another computer impersonating yours and sending the router/AP the command to disconnect, the idea being that when your computer re-establishes the connection it re-sends the wireless credentials. The hacker's system could be logging all wireless traffic in the area hoping to capture/crack your wireless password.

Thank you. I never suspected the router, but it is 4-7 years old.

I have been experiencing a similar issue for a few months. I think the wireless drivers for Linux must be patchy as I hadn't noticed it before. However, I just decommissioned my own wireless router, over 5 years old, and started using the one the cable company provided router and thou I haven't been using it for more than about an hour is seems a lot more stable.
I wonder whether drivers are being optimised for "Wireless N" so are not so good with G?

Thanks. Following your lead I just switched to the network provided by the cable company. So far (5 minutes) so good

To follow up I have had no dropouts at all since changing to the cable company router.

I've had exactly one, and I'm delighted.
