network connectivity...probably easy to solve..
 

ok my problem is that i can't seem to get any internet connection. i know the port is live and the cables are good b/c i plugged it into a windows OS machine and everything is fine....

i've loaded centos 4.1 on to my machine and the first time i used it, the internet was initially deactivated. i had to go through the system's settings and network configurations to activate it and it worked.

but now when i follow the same steps, i can't seem to get any connection. the network configuration management fails to obtain an ip address and i know that the jack, cables, and dhcp server is up and running.

the onyl idea i have is an IRQ conflict. here's the output....

here;s the irq info for eth when i execute 'cat /proc/interrupts'

here libata and eth1 is on irq 5. my question is does this cause a problem?

Need a little more info.

Who/what is managing the dhcp server?
Output of ifconfig?
Why is it coming up as eth1, is it a secondary card, modem??

IRQ conflicts can cause problems but are generally shareable on PCI.

sorry for the lack of information...

basically i'm on a network maintained by my appartment complex. i know that the dhcp server is working b/c i used the same jack and cable and hooked it up to a windows pc...which worked.

it's a bit difficult to get the output of ifconfig b/c i don't have internet connection on that machine so i can't just cut and paste. i'm using my laptop to post on this forum. but when i get hope, i'll type it out if that helps.

yes i have 2 NIC's on the desktop. i have the ASUS A8N-sli deluxe motherboard. i can hook it up to either NICs. i tried using eth0 but i experienced the same problem.

Hm... any other suggestions of info you need? i will post the ifconfig output when ig et back home.

i know this was a poor post but that's due to the fact that i have limited internet use since my system did not have internet connection.

but i finally was able to figure out what was wrong. i hope this would help someone out in the future who might experience the same problems i did.

anyhow, what solved the problem is disabling one of the NIC's on my motherboard. since my motherboard (asus a8n-sli) has 2 nic's i assume there was some conflict or cause some confusion on my linux box when trying to connect to the network/internet.

solution: disable one of the nic's in the bios settings.
