Network connection unstable with Ubuntu
 

I have a laptop with a wifi and internet NIC. Every 15 minutes or so, I lose GAIM and SSH connections.

The dropouts are too quick to show up on a running ping and there doesn't seem to be anything in /log/messages. I have tried removing the wifi pcmcia card, but the problem is the same with the internal NIC.

I didn't have this problem with Ubuntu Hedgehog.

I have tried dhcp and fixed IP.

How do I troubleshoot this problem?

What wireless card are you using? I used to experience intermitent wifi problems similar to yours that was solved with a firmware upgrade. Not quite sure why it would happen with ethernet card as well though.

The wifi card is a 3com xjack pcmcia jibby jobbie. However, I can remove it and use the cabled NIC and suffer the same rhythmic drop-outs. I'm after a method/tool to troubleshoot the issue. When I have 4 SSH sessions open, all routed through several boxes, it's a major pain to reconnect them every 20 mins and renders the PC useless forcing me to use Windows. I don't want to go back to Hoary or another distro as Breezy addresses some fanickety issues with Gnome 2.12.

I get the exact same thing
but mine is between 5 minutes and 15 minutes repeatedly

I've heard its something to do with network manager in gnome

im going to try stopping /etc/init.d/networking then use ifconfig manually to see if that results in any change

Had the same problem. Just thought that it might be handy if I post the work around I have found.

I installed the driver via ndiswrapper, like it says in my next post (not allowed to post links yet. Not everything was the same, but well.....

To be sure I added rt2500 (not usb) to the blacklist, but I don't know if this is necessary.

Anyway, I have a stable and better connection now.

It's been so long I can't remember what the solution was - if any. These days I don't mess about with wifi connections - still think they're pants and much prefer a good old fashioned RJ45 cable.
