Network connected but have no internet

Running Mint 17.1

Shut the system down last night and when I restarted this morning there was no internet connection. It is connected directly to the router - not wifi.

I'm sure the system is online because the software update manager downloaded and installed two packages.

Tried changing the proxy settings but that did not help.

In addition, is the LAN functioning i.e. can you access the router itself or other devices?

Does the network icon indicate the computer is connected?

Can other devices access the internet?

What type of broadband service i.e cable, DSL etc.

Have you checked the MODEM lights to see if it is connected? You should also be able to access the router's maintenance page to check its status too. The quick fix could be resetting power to the MODEM and router.

"proxy settings " That isn't typical.

Your computer should have lights on nic card usually. One or two ought to be lit if connection (wires) are OK.

It works now

Deleted the old connection and created a new one and it works.

It is still a mystery why it stopped working but everything seems to be OK now.

Cheers,

Down again

Lost the internet again but here's what is really weird. I can connect and stream netflix in google chrome but I cannot connect to any other websites.

Re-creating the connections does not fix it this time.

Other websites cannot connect in chrome and netflix will not connect in firefox.

Other devices in the house, both wired and wireless, are having not problems.

Boot to live mint cd/dvd/usb and see if it works correctly.

If one web site works then we have to at least assume some portion of the networking chain works correctly.
