network configuration in ubuntu

I have installed kubuntu amd 64 version but when I tried to configure network in it . It displayed that eth0 not found .
My configuration is
Amd 64 2800
Asus Motherboard
sis 190

I also tried fedora 3 before but there was same problem in that.
But i got a driver from and recompiled the kernel with
instructions on readme file of that driver then I found that
eth0 was detected and I could "ping" network but could not ssh or browse
Can someone please suggest me what should I do to configure network
and which linux is suitable for me
