Network configuration failure: "network unreachable" after start-up

After upgrading to Slackware64 14.0 - from 13.37 - the network configuration which happens when the system gets to the default runlevel fails. The configuration is done through netconfig, which would always get things right. It did not matter if I started the system with the modem connected directly to it, or through the router, which is the setup I usually use - or else no-one else can connect. But, this time, it did not.

In netconfig, I would set the machine name and select DHCP when asked. This is usually enough. I will call this configuration "default". It would start the DHCP program (dhcpcd) and be offered an IP by the router, but - for some reason - it would never update the /etc/resolv.conf with a gateway address. The result was that commands such as ping <IP> would return a network unreachable error message. Which is understandable.

I had a inet1.conf file from before the system upgrade. It had the same settings given by netconfig. The file is as follows:
Code:
 /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf
#
# This file contains the configuration settings for network interfaces.
# If USE_DHCP[interface] is set to "yes", this overrides any other settings.
# If you don't have an interface, leave the settings null ("").

# You can configure network interfaces other than eth0,eth1... by setting
# IFNAME[interface] to the interface's name. If IFNAME[interface] is unset
# or empty, it is assumed you're configuring eth<interface>.

# Several other parameters are available, the end of this file contains a
# comprehensive set of examples.

                                # set through the iwpriv command. If more than
                                # one is required, you can place them in the
                                # IWPRIV parameter (separated with the pipe (|)
                                # character, see the example).
This would not get me connected. I could get the network to work by logging on as root, killing dhcpcd, running "/etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 down" and "/etc/rc.d/rc.inet1" in different orders, and eventually the network would be available. I couldn't find an order, a pattern that would work every time. But eventually things would work, /etc/resolv.conf would get a line with a nameserver, and I would be able to connect.

I checked the FAQ at the Slackware website, which would have an entrance like this (link):
Q: Why do I get "network unreachable" under Slackware?

There are a couple of possibilities. For most users, things work right out of the box. However, if you're running into this problem here are two workarounds you can try:
  1. Reverse the broadcast and netmask arguments (and their variables) in the call to ifconfig in /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1. Make sure you are not trying to route your own IP address - you shouldn't have to.
  2. Make sure /etc/networks is properly configured.
  3. You may want to try the 'netconfig' script. It's not perfect, but does a pretty good job.
  4. Make sure the kernel you're using supports your hardware. Most of the kernels provided with Slackware include a /boot/config file where you can look up the compilation options.

So I've tried the first suggestion. If I did it correctly, I should change the line
Code:
/sbin/ifconfig ${1} ${IPADDR[$i]} broadcast ${BROADCAST[$i]} netmask ${NETMASK[$i]}
to
Code:
/sbin/ifconfig ${1} ${IPADDR[$i]} netmask ${NETMASK[$i]} broadcast ${BROADCAST[$i]}
which I did. And, alas, it didn't work.

So I check Alien Bob's Slackware Network Wiki page, and changed my inet1 eth0 configuration section to
Code:
# Config information for eth0:
IPADDR[0]=""
NETMASK[0]=""
USE_DHCP[0]="yes"
DHCP_HOSTNAME[0]="jmaster"
DHCP_TIMEOUT[0]="" # The default timeout for the DHCP client to
                               # wait for server response is 30 seconds,
                               # but you might want a shorter wait.
IFNAME[0]="eth0:1" # Set up an IP alias.
#HWADDR[0]="" # Overrule the card's hardware MAC address
MTU[0]="" # The default MTU is 1500, but you might need
                               # 1360 when you use NAT'ed IPSec traffic.
DHCP_KEEPRESOLV[0]="" # If you dont want /etc/resolv.conf overwritten
DHCP_KEEPNTP[0]=""          # If you don't want ntp.conf overwritten
DHCP_KEEPGW[0]="" # If you don't want the DHCP server to change
                               # your default gateway
DHCP_IPADDR[0]="" # Request a specific IP address from the DHCP
                               # server
It also didn't work, but I would get a time out when the system would start. However, simply running /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 as root would always get the network up. So, by now, every time I turn my machine on, I do that to get the network to work. But I wanted it to be set during start-up, which is the reason I now ask for help. I do not know what is wrong, that is, why it does not get set when the system starts, but then when I run the command which I supposed the system would use, it works. Isn't it inet1 which is used during start-up? And how do I configure things to have the net available every time I boot the system?

In the following, I present the system data I have, from as soon as the system goes up, and after I run /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 with the modifications above.

System settings:
Distro: Slackware64 14.0
