Network configuration

So I've installed linux without a network connection.
Now I have a network connection where my ip is assigned by dhcp.
How do I bring up my network interface? Running:

ifconfig eth0 up

doesn't really do anything, it bring up the device without any actual connection.

Can I bring up this network interface without using one of the distribution specific config programs?

I figured I'd be able to do this just using ifconfig, but I can't figure out how.

Thanks.

Code:
ifconfig eth0 up
FYI that has noting to do with a connection, it simply brings the network interface up. If you want it to negotiate a connection and grab an IP you should use dhcpcd. Some distros have scripts to use instead of directly running the DHCP client but this will get it working.
Code:
dhcpcd -t 10 eth0
