I recently installed RedHat 7.1 (my first linux experience), and am having no luck figuring out how to install an ethernet card (currently working with a Realtek 8139, but also have a D-Link 530TX+). I have a small home network (2 Win 95 computers, and one Win 98), and would like to ultimatley share a modem / internet connection with the Win 98 box.

Can someone please direct me to the best resource for getting step-by-step instructions for:

1. Installing and configuring my NIC.

2. Configuring Samba so I can share files (and a modem) with my other computers.

I tried to reinstall the whole OS in hopes that it would walk me through the network configuration, but it doesn't ever take me to the Network Config screen (it always seems to skip from the LILO config to the Firewall config). I've tried three different cards now -- also tried a LinkSys LNE100TX at one point as well.

The best book I have found ( and one I refer to regularly) is the O'Rielly 'Using Samba' book. It is short, to the point and had me up and running with Samba in no time.

As far as getting the NIC to work, I read the Osbourne book 'Linux Administration: A Beginners Guide'. This book too is a good reference for simply getting most things up and running and walks you through installing and configuring your NIC.

I recommend both if you want to use Linux for admin chores and are just starting out.
