Network card problem under Suse 9.1 but not under Knoppix V 3.7

Hello all,

I recently installed Suse 9.1 and have a problem getting my network
card recognized. It's an SMC, chipset 83C795.

Before installing Suse, I tried Knoppix V 3.7, 2004-12-08; it
recognized the network card without a problem.

While configuring the network card in Suse, I tried all the SMC cards listed, unfortunately to no avail.

So, I used irconfig in Knoppix to find out my hardware address, interrupt, base address and memory (I'm freely translating these terms from the German output that came up, I don't know if they are correct).

Back in Suse, I went into YaST>Network Devices>Network Card and configured eth0, leaving all the default settings as they were, except in 'Hardware Details'. In 'Options' I added the info I gathered from Knoppix:

io=0x230 mac=00:00:C0:DB:B3:A8 irq=10

Does anybody know why Suse isn't recognizing the network card and what I can do to get it recognized? By the way, I also tried Mepis 2004.06, but that distro didn't recognize the network card, either.

Thanks.

If it's not listed in the SuSE hardware database then it may not be supported unless it has a compatability setting. If you have the driver disk for it you may be able to set it up as an NE2000 compatible for instance. Other than that I would suggest either the SuSE Knowledge database or SMC themselves may have an answer.

Thanks for your answer. I'll try SMC directly, perhaps they can help.
