Network card detection problem

I had a problem while installing Slackware 9.1. over NFS.
My network card sometimes gives an error while using modprobe with 8139too module but sometimes modprobe is successful however the system freezes when trying to configure it.

I don't know if this helps but the network card is a FNC-0109TX model with a RTL8139C chip.
I tried lspci -v on it and gave many similar entries like this one:

55:08.0 Class 0200: 10ec:8139 (rev 10)
Subsystem: 1113:ec01
Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 0, IRQ 9
I/O ports at 10000
Memory at 10005400 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=256]
Expansion ROM at fe000000 [disabled] [size=64K]
Capabilities: [50] Power Management version 2

The PC is an old 486 that I want to recycle.

Rui
