network card, broadband, a lot of trouble

hey,

im running rh9 with a NIC plugged in and all recognised etc. i plug my broadband cable into the NIC ( ethernet ) and set it to 'get ip address from DHCP'. when i do

ifup eth0

for some reason it tries to ping 192.168.1.1, then says failed. when this ip has nothing to do with anything. im not on a LAN im just on a direct connection.

has anyone got any ideas why this might be happening as it wont get an ip address?

Post the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 file.

i cant get it off the box, but it just has basic settings e.g set to use dhcp, ther is nothing to do with any ip' addys in there or anything to do with 192.168.1.1
