I recently just moved and changed from a DSL connection to Cable modem. I have 3 computers, (1 XP, 1 Win2000, and 1 RH8.0) and I set these up behind an 8-port Linksys router. This configuration worked great with the DSL connection but now with the Cable Modem the internet works only on the 2 windows machines and not on the linux machine. My windows machines can access the linux machine through the network and vice versa, I can also ping all device on the network (router, windows pcs, etc.) and I can also ping the IP address given from the ISP (ex. 24.197.240.160 works correctly). If I try to ping any other internet address it doesn't work.
I did have to clone a windows NIC MAC address to the router to get the internet to work on the windows machines. I'm wondering if this is preventing the linux machine from accessing anything on the internet. I did try cloning the linux NIC MAC address to the router and nothing was able to access the internet. My /etc/resolv.conf file has nameserver entries for my router IP address and IP address I recieved from the IPS (ex 24.197.240.160, it is dynamic) and nothing. Anyone know what is going on or conqueror this seemingly impossible problem?
Right, for example because I connect modem->router->hub->computers I get one public ip address to identify my network as I mentioned above, and when I ping that, it is successful.
I am not able to resolve hostnames. It just hangs while trying to resolve any hostname and then errors out with "<Hostname> could not be found. Please try again." in Mozilla, and when I ping a hostname it basically says the same thing.
