network and ftp (& ssh)

I'm having a problem. ftp won't login, but gftp will. ssh won't either. Both ftp and ssh hang on or just before logging on. Surfing, mail etc all OK.

My network is this:

Linux RH7 with iptables (currently set up with no rules at all, & INPUT, FORWARD and OUTPUT default to ACCEPT) with 2 NICs.

The NIC at eth1 gets its IP address via DHCP from my DSL modem when I start the network.

This is making me pull my hair out - I've cut out iptables and double checked the network settings, and the only things left it might be is: faulty hardware or something to do with the modem DHCP server setup.

One thing that I am suspicious about is that the modem gives a card an address of e.g. 87.11.157.212 (from DHCP) but I see packets going to and fro to 192.168.1.1 - the modem. Is that OK?

Any ideas where to look? Thanks!!!

Nope that would be the problem.
We need a guru here...............

Your packets are being routed to the wrong card.
Also both of the cards are not pluged into the same hub are they?

your html is wierd as well. did the forum software do that, or did you type it in?

<later/> well, your html was wierd.

Anyway, no the eth0 is plugged into the hub for my other pcs, but the eth1 is plugged directly into the modem.

Code:
eth1      Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr 00:C1:26:0D:29:50
          inet addr:81.157.11.222  Bcast:81.157.11.222  Mask:255.255.255.255
          UP BROADCAST NOTRAILERS RUNNING MTU:1500 Metric:1
          RX packets:6398 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:6671 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0
          RX bytes:1744370 (1.6 Mb)  TX bytes:882666 (861.9 Kb)
Looks alright under ifconfig.

howzabout this for the if.confg
Code:
[root@localhost devices]# cat ifcfg-eth1
DEVICE=eth1
ONBOOT=no
BOOTPROTO=static
TYPE=Ethernet
USERCTL=no
NETWORK=10.0.0.0
BROADCAST=10.255.255.255
PEERDNS=no
[root@localhost devices]#

Nope, I typed it in the box and submited it. Must have been a glitch with the fourm. I see my post clear and not jumbled like you say.

I am not at home so I can not see how my smoothwall box routes packets across 2 cards. I have never used just an distro to do this. Might want to wate for someone else to come along to help. You could always just push the moderator button and maybe someone will help. I do know that its a routing problem so you could just google for it.
