Network/ADSL problem

I have finally moved up to ADSL from dialup for my Internet. I have a Modem-Router(1 port) which connects to a Switch. I have 2 windows machines which are happily using the connection to the Net.
The linux computer can ping the other computers and they can ping it. I can ping the router 192.168.1.1 but I can not ping past the router! (I get a Network is unreachable).
I can not access the router setup page using Firefox (Time out attempting to contact 192.168.1.1)
In FC3 using the network setup I can not activate the xDSL connection but when i look at the Network adapters Configuration it says the card can not be initialised, please verify settings .... and there is a box that says :

Command failed: /sbin/modprobe r8169 Gigabit Ethernet driver 1.1.2
Output:
Fatal: Module r8169 Gigabit Ethernet driver 1.1.2 not found

if config shows etho 192.168.1.2 and lo 127.0.0.1

any suggestions gratefully accepted
TIA

Hmm, this is a bit of a puzzle. You say that the Linux box can ping any local network addresses (192.168.1.x), but no external ones? It sounds like your Linux box has no idea that there is a router on your network to access the outside world.
Are your machines configured using DHCP at boot time? Or is each machine configured manually (IP address, router, DNS, etc.)?

This doesn't explain why you can't configure the router with firefox though - if you can ping the box, you should be able to access it via http.

If I think of anything else, I'll let you know. In the mean-time, check out what I said above.

I have managed to get online 2 times today for short periods. I have not done anything apart from a reboot eachtime. As I write this UP2DATE is updating some progs but Firefox can not get online or access the router (update has finished downloading a file but has not started on the next file, ie It has stopped downloading)
All Ip addresses are set as static

not sure how to do it for eth0, but I do know how to do it for wlan0, not sure its the same, but did you configure your gateway? I am not at my linux box right now. I am on my g/f's laptop which is xp. I know it has something to do with if/iwconfig read the man pages it tells you how to set the gateway.

This is very odd behaviour - have you set a gateway IP address? Tormented_one is right, you use ifconfig to set this. What distro are you using? Most of the distros that I've used have some method of configuring your network card (YaST in SuSE, for example).

As for FireFox, what are your connection settings (go to Edit, then Preferences, it should be in there somewhere)? There are different ways to configure the browser; either directly connect, use an automatic configuration script, or you can define your proxy manually. I would have thought that you'd need it to be set up to directly connect to the net.
You can compare your settings in FireFox to that of IE on your Windows machines:
In IE, go to Tools, then Internet Options, then Connections. There is a button labelled LAN settings (or something similar), if you click on this, you can find out the proxy settings of the browser. If it's set to the automatically configure/connect option (once again, I'm not too sure of the exact wording), you'll need to set FireFox to directly connect to the net.

Thanks guys/gals for your input. The connection is working now. I do not know what I did except for a couple of reboots, maybe some changes I made earlier didn't take effect until the reboots?

The gateway was set and Firefox was all set as well. Real strange but it's working now and its great!
