Ok... Well maybe i'm missing a step or something. How should I go about this. Should I re-install linux, or is there a less time consuming approach? And if i do re-install, should I have the card in the machine when I begin?
thank you for any help you can give.

What version of linux are you running,
I Use Krud which is red hat based.
If you do reinstall then yes ensure the card is there when you install linux.
Red hat has a laptop install optin which ensures that the pcmcia device drivers are loaded.
