netcat connection refused

O.K everybody I'm new to linux and that and prefer my techie answers in the speak and spell mode, so please be gentle with me. I'm trying to get one linux box to talk to another using the nc version of netcat. The listener starts ok but I get the connection refused message back when I try to post. I can see the listener on the port through netstat, so there's something there. I'm guessing that I have to enable something on the listening port. Any help and guidance would be gratefully received.

Forget it, I'm a dullard and get easily confused by ip addresses.
