netbios without samba?

Is mputer with 32 MB of ram, and using it to route packthere a way to give my linux computer a netbios name without using samba? I'm using a 200 MHz coets from 18 computers to the internet. I disabled everything I didn't need to increase speed. I need it to have a netbios name so I (and the most importantly, the people above me) can easily find it in a network scan. Thanks for the trouble.

to see it on a microsoft network you will need a microsoft network server running on it. (Samba)

You might be able to set something up in your hosts file....

make up a name and assign it to the ip of your linux box....

microsoft network is a service that's running on a windows machine. The browser process scans for servers and lists them in network neighborhood. If you do not run a server you cannot see it.

how much more processing power would samba take from my 200 MHz? I need all I can get to manage the dhcp server and router.

It really makes no sense to have samba just for the sake of the machine showing up in network neighborhood. What purpose will it serve to be able to see it?

If you want to see the effect then run top and check the status of the system before and after starting samba.

I think you might be able to start NMB only and still see the system in your browse list.

The point, is so when the school runs LanGuard lannet scanner, they will see a name with the computer's ip, so they know what computer they are seeing.

Unless I am wrong you can start nmbd by itself and you will see it

if you turn off smb in initd
Code:
chkconfig smb off
then start nmbd

Code:
/usr/sbin/nmbd -D -n NETBIOSNAME

this is probably less system demand than running smb

if you find it works ok, then add the command to run nmbd to your /etc/rc.d/rc.local file, that will make it run on boot
