netatalk and Panther = file and dir corruption

I am building a RedHat 9 based file server to be used in a mixed network of Macs running OS 9 and OS 10.3
I tried my own recompile of netatalk 1.5.3.1 SRPM and 1.5.5 that came with RH9 with the same results: everything works fine when accessed from OS 9, but when a Mac running Panther accesses the share - directories and files get moved all around randomly. A bunch of files sitting in a subdir three levels deep will all the sudden appear at the root level of the share e.t.c.

I've tried shares on hardware raid 5 volumes as well as software raid 1, both running ext3.

The 1.5.3.1 version of netatalk is a YellowDog SRPM recompiled for RH. The same version of netatalk works fine on YellowDog installed from RPM. I haven't tried recompiling the SRPM on YDL, but that's what the RPM in the distro ought to be, right?

I've tried recompiling netatalk 1.6.4, but with that installed I was unable to access shares. Apparently there's a problem with BDB missing some components, but that's a separate issue. I might post some feedback once I get 1.6.4 working.

Meanwhile, has anyone seen this problem? Any suggestions?

Artur

Thumbs down

Not a solution--

I'm having the same problem. Differences are:

- network of 12 people. 3 on mac OS 10.3.3. only one user affected by this problem (with 10.3.3 also before with 10.2.x).
- using Fedora Core 1 / 2 x NIC / 3 mounts of 250GB each
- netatalk 1.5.5

I have seen this with other networks as well, same computers with SMB or NFS connections don't have this problem (also not a solution).
I can't get my own combination of Fedora and Mac OS X to show the same problem...

Joost
