net connection slow
 

I am using a dial up internet connection and it seems slower in linux than in windows. I am on Slcakware 9.1 and when I download files I get only 3.3 kb/sec speeds but in windows I get 4kb/sec.

Is there any changes to be made so that the connection is optimized for my dialup?

What are your hardware specs(i.e. modem model/brand)?

This won't increase your connection speed but make sure that if your ISP offers data compression that you are taking advantage of it. Windows will do this automaticaly, in linux you must specify "deflate" or "bsdcomp" in your pppd options file. Check out the pppd man page for details.
Also you must have built these as modules or have the capabilites compiled into your Kernel.

I am using the default kernel and pppd which was installed when I installed slackware 9.1
And I am using PCtel Chipset Internal modem

I added
bsdcomp 15
deflate 15
to my options file in /etc/ppp/ and still the download speed seems same
Is there any other option I need to configure?

Ah, you are using a PCtel modem. I think that that may be your problem. I had a PCtel modem and could never get it to work right under linux, it would always slow down and disconect at inoportune times. I use a diffrent modem now with the same configuration on the same computer now, and I get a perfectly normal connection.
As for the compression, mabye your ISP dosen't use it, or mabye you need to build the compression modules. Although the first is probably more likely as distros usually compile EVERYTHING into their default kernels.
Well I hope you have better luck with your PCtel than I did with mine.

I have no problems like disconnecting and all in this new version of driver although I did had lot of problems earlier this one works like a charm only the speed is slow :(

Hey, I'm a newbie but now on my second linux distro...(mndk 10). I run it on a 20 gb partition on a 120 gb drive dual booting with Windows XP Pro SP1. I have a home-made box that keeps evolving. It has a Gigabyte MB, Pentium 4 processor, 512 DDR with lots of peripherals. So as to use a dialup modem with both Windows and Linux, I recently bought an external serial creative modem blaster. Linux detected it and I was able to go online with kppp but the speed was very slow....maybe 4k. I really didn't know what to do about this and had no time to attempt a solution but I was thinking on it. I wouldn't have wished what happened next but my windows system crashed big time. Windows was down for a couple of weeks, during which time, I HAPPILY and EXCLUSIVELY used Mandrake 10, which was, of course, unaffected by the windows crash. Funny thing, with my windows system refusing to boot at all, my modem began to WORK GREAT in Linux. I would never have bothered re-installing Windows had I been able to find linux modem on hold software for my new v92 modem. When I reformatted the partitions that were to hold my fresh windows installation, my modem continued to work fine in Linux. However, when I got Windows re-installed and up and running again, everything in Linux SLOWED DOWN AGAIN. When Windows was either corrupt or gone, I could open web pages in only a few seconds in either Konquerer or Mozilla. Now, I sometimes get a 404 error after several minutes of trying to load. I checked the data rates and they are way down. Nothing in Mandrake 10 has changed but something has obviously gone awry somewhere. Any ideas? Be easy with me, I'm not very Linux experienced but I'm not afraid to try stuff....
