Need to find books on Linux networking with Mac OSX
 

I've been having numerous problems with a Linux server networking with Macs running OSX. I tried looking for help in a bunch of different places but didn't get any help at all. I was hoping that some of you who may have knowledge of Linux to Mac OSX networking could share with me the books that you may have used. Scouring the internet for help hasn't done me much good so I'm looking to get some books on networking. Is there any good books that talk about Linux networking with Mac OSX?

The Linux server is working for the most part and doesn't have very many problems. Of the problems it has it involves Mac OSX. So any book that talks extensively or maybe even exclusively about Linux to Mac OSX networking would be definitely beneficial. Please let me know. I've been having this problem for months now and have not gotten much response at all. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What exactly are you trying to do that isn't working?

The Apple File Sharing protocol is not working properly. For Mac OSX, I'm trying to set up the appletalk file sharing so that it can share files on the Linux server. The server is running Suse 9.2 Pro and has something called Netatalk which is configured to support Macs. The problem is that the version of Netatalk that I have is out of date and doesn't fully support OSX. The new version of Netatalk (v 2.0) is said to have full support of Mac OSX. I tried to compile my own version since Yast in Suse didn't update netatalk. I was not able to get Netatalk v 2.0 working. A lot of people at the office are starting to get really frustrated because the file sharing for Macs are not working properly.

I work with large graphics which the filesize often range from about 30 MB and usually much more than that. What's been happening is that Mac OSX transfering files of this size or more constantly get kicked off the server. When files are transferred of this size from OS 9, it works perfectly fine. The same goes for Windows and other Linux boxes. The problem is only occuring with Mac OSX trying to communicate with the Linux server.

At this point I'm not sure what to do. I have heard that Samba is really good and possibly better than Netatalk. I'm not experienced with either so I've been seeking help and posting everywhere about getting help from this problem but have not gotten response. I have no clue what do and how to solve this problem. This is why I'm looking to find books to help solve this problem. I really need to get some help in fixing this problem becuase with this happening all the time, it slows down productivity and I'm getting a lot of slack for it. OS X has samba biult in so instead of using old and not that reliable appletalk, maybe try samba.
OS X also has support for NFS. Basically it should be similar configuration as in case of linux (in case of samba and NFS).

Also check if OS X recognize full duplex or only half duplex

How do I check the duplex for Mac OSX? Also, I've tried Samba sharing from Linux to Mac OSX but still have the similar problem of getting kicked off the server. Is there a setting in either Netatalk or Samba that restricts bandwidth? Also, is there a setting on Mac OSX that inhibits the transfer of files?
