need to close ports to secure machine

After scanning a couple internet servers and seeing they use only 2 or 3 open ports, i scanned my machine and here is the output:

Port State Service
21/tcp open ftp
22/tcp open ssh
25/tcp open smtp
37/tcp open time
79/tcp open finger
111/tcp open sunrpc
113/tcp open auth
515/tcp open printer
587/tcp open submission
6000/tcp open X11

This looks like way too many open ports for me. How do i close them all off except the needed ones.

I use eth0 for internet connection. I use pop3/smtp mail client. no ftp or web server, no shared printer. anything else you need to know before you can help close ports, just let me know.

if you dont know iptables use firestarter(look at freshmeat) to close ports and also if you dont use them close the services running.
