Need information on 3g usb dongle support in linux

Experts,
Iam planning to add 3g usb dongle support to my device that runs montavista, kernel-2.6.32.59. The device runs freescale powerpc e500 core.
Need below information:
1. Is the relevant drivers present in this kernel? is there any steps to get the drivers/lib compiled?
2. I want to support for multiple usb modem vendors. is there any common 3g stack? how to get it included?
3. Also, how the kernel detects this usb devices as modem instead of storage device? is there any settings that should be done....

Is there any link or thread that has the procedures and guides to add this support?
Really appreciate your help. !!

-thanks
Prabhu.

me, expert! hugh!

what kind of distro is "montavista"? graphical (desktop) or command line only?
what have you tried already?
modern desktop distros should have 3g usb dongle support out of the box.
kernel 2.6.xxx sounds old. is your hardware old?

Kind of a lot of issues.

One is the driver. Two is the age of the kernel. Three is the platform. Last may be some issues as to how your isp allows usb connection and authentication, that would need to be available in the system or added to it.

I'd at least try it.

This is a somewhat general sort of info.

Not sure all of that would be available on a ppc system.

If we knew what distro you are using we might guess better.

I might be tempted to just get a soho router that has usb and is known to support 3g/4g. I have an Asus that works like magic.

hi Ondoho,
thanks for your reply.. this is montavista command line distribution. Device is an access router.
yes, the hw is pretty old.

hi Jefro
Thanks for the link. Yes, i had already gone through few links that explains about wvdial and pppd related stuff.
my other worry is, the driver part. Does market's latest usb 3g modem have their drivers integrated into the kernel?

-thanks
Prabhu.

i'm sorry, but...
1) there's no "markets latest usb 3g modem" - it's a technology being replaced by 4g for more than a year now.
so the latest 3g modem is actually a 4g modem that supports 3g.
2) it's not the modems that have their drivers integrated into the kernel, but it's the kernel that supports 3g dongles, and...
3) modern linux systems support these out of the box.

...so, with a 2.6.xxx kernel, you probabaly have to look closer at ppp/wvdial/usb-modeswitch. it's up to your distro, in the end, wether support is already there or not.
but it's definitely possible to get it working.
i don't know anything about your hardware though - i must have overlooked that bit when i first read your post.

A lot of legacy stuff seems to remain in kernels. Not sure you need a driver as such, you need a generic way to access the device and operate it.

I have a samsung 4g that works like magic in debian on amd-64. I'd assume an older one would work.

You're working on a ppc, that brings an entire new set of issues that we can't guess. There isn't a lot of people running that.
