Need help with setting up network with winxp

I have a new install of SuSe 8.2 pro.
It is installed on the same hdd as my winxp.
I have dsl on ppoe running and all systems including suse are working.

I need to install a printer but this system does not have a printer connected since they are on my network.

I have 5 computers connected to a Linksys router.
One is a laptop running win98se.
1 runs winxp home and has a printer on usb port.
1 runs winxp home and has a printer on parallel port.
1 has dual boot between win98se and winxp home.
1 has dual boot between Suse linux and winxp home.

I must have 50 questions but I'll start with these two.

How do I get my suse to communicate with the other systems ?

Since the usb printer is the nearest, how do I install it on suse ?

Welcome to LQ.

You will need to use samba. The equivilent of "File and printer sharing for microsoft netoworks". Just share the printer that is attached to the windows machine then use your printer config wizard to add a printer connected with "smb".

RE: Printer config wizard

Are you refering to a wizard in linux or the wizard in xp ?

My printer is already shared and all my windows systems use it.

There should be a printer configuration tool in linux that will let you add the printer. I think it is under Yast.

yamawho 10-05-2003 03:07 PM

I tried that in yast afew times, it can't find a printer.

In yast also under local network there is a place for samba client.
I put in my network workgroup name and a user but no go.

david_ross 10-05-2003 03:16 PM

What error messages do you get?

yamawho 10-05-2003 03:26 PM

Well in yast2 hardware/printer

Printer setup: Autodetected
Available are:
Other (not detected)

Already installed printers and queues:
* Not detected

david_ross 10-05-2003 03:30 PM

Don't use auto detect - set the printer up manually. That way you can specify the address of the remote printer.

yamawho 10-05-2003 03:46 PM

I pressed lookup and it found 192.168.1.1 for my router for host name.

What is name of remote queue ?

david_ross 10-05-2003 03:49 PM

That is the shared name of the printer.

yamawho 10-05-2003 03:51 PM

OK remote queue is printer name

I put hp940c (which is the printer name in windows)

I put the adm user n that computer with no pw since there is none.

I then pressed test remote smb access.

I got There was a problem.

You specified an invalid queue name on the printer server.

david_ross 10-05-2003 04:02 PM

Is that the name of the printer or the name of the share? When you go to the sharing tab there may be a different name specified.

On XP run:
net view \\127.0.0.1

This should tell you the name. Post the output if you are unsure.

yamawho 10-05-2003 04:13 PM

The share name on the under properties/sharing is hp940c

Thats what I tried 1st.
Then I tried hp deskjet 940c ... no go.

david_ross 10-05-2003 04:16 PM

Are you sure this is the section for adding an smb printer and not a jet direct or lpr printer?

yamawho 10-05-2003 04:20 PM

Connectionfor printer:

I picked Show more connection types.

Select printer type:
SMB Printing (Samba/windows printer)

BTW when I type net view \\127.0.0.1 in run, a black window opens up for only 1/4 second.
