Need help with pop3

I am new to redhat 9. I have previously used freebsd and solaris. I can't get pop3 to work. I have tried the ipop that came with it and qpopper.

Nothing I do will make this thing accept connections from pop clients.

I get "Could not connect to server .... connection was refused.

Can anyone give me a step by step on setting up pop3 on Redhat 9?

Maybe I can figure out which step I am missing.

ipop3

open the file /etc/xinetd.d/ipop3.

should look like the following:

# default: off
# description: The POP3 service allows remote users to access their mail \
# using an POP3 client such as Netscape Communicator, mutt, \
# or fetchmail.
service pop3
{
disable = yes
socket_type = stream
wait = no
user = root
server = /usr/sbin/ipop3d
log_on_success += HOST DURATION
log_on_failure += HOST
}

change the disable = yes to dissable = no

save changes and close the file

service xinetd restart

I have enable ipop3, I have enable imap and imaps. I installed qpopper and enabled it on pop3 (with ipop3 disabled). No matter what I try, this thing refuses to accept connections on port 110.

There is a firewall installed but it is currently set wide open. Every other port is working.

The configuration files are default. The only change I made is to change yes to no on disable. I restarted xinetd.

What else could be wrong. I see from some other posts that I am not the only one having this problem.

Wheel and come again

follow my instructions in the first post and followind the:
$: service xinetd restart

try a port scan on the localhost
$: nmap localhost -p 110 {the -p 110 is optional}

port 110 should be open

give me a little info on qpopper

holla back

nmap shows port 110 closed. How do I force it open?

qpopper is a pop3 server from Eudora. I have used it for years on first a freebsd server and currently on a solaris 8 server.
