need help setting up dhcp client

At start-up time I get this message from dhcpcd:

broadcasting DHCP_DISCOVER

timed out waiting for a valid server response

I was wondering what I should do in order to configure my client to find the dhcp server (sorry for such a BROAD question). I know someone who is running kernel v2.4.9 with dhcpcd 1.3.18 (what I was originally trying to use) and his box connects fine. Does it have anything to do with some update in the kernel?

my specs:
2.2.16
Linksys Etherfast 10/100Mbps LNE100TX
dhcpcd 1.3.20 pl10

. . . and I think that's all that's too it.

Thanks
