Need help getting an old server accessible remotely

Hello, all.

I'm trying to find a use for my old Precision laptop (around 11 years old), thought I'd make a lightweight file server/animation slave out of it. I installed Mint 17.1 on it (Ubuntu was too heavy, Fedora didn't support the ancient graphics card) and it works OK right now.
I have a good network connection, can get a SSH session running, and can get a basic SMB share going. But I'd like to be able to connect to it with VNC. I installed vnc4server and tried to use that, but I get errors regarding to the X server not being able to open a display in the log, and the client box (Fedora 21) is dumped instantly with the error "connection refused".
After that I tried using Ubuntu's remote desktop server, but for some reason it doesn't give me the IP/port to connect to! All I can do is check boxes and click buttons, same issue with another Ubuntu box. Useless...

If anyone can help, thanks in advance!

Try tunneling the vnc port over your ssh connection, which works well for me. Get the vnc server running, then connect over ssh with -L 12345:localhost:5900 (or whatever ports you wish). Then on your remote workstation open a vnc client to localhost:5900

server, ubuntu, vnc
