Can you be a bit more descriptive - what protocol are you using?

What have you done so far?

What client are you connecting with?

(im a linux noob :p and gladley moving away from microsoft) This is what i did.. I created a new folder, right clicked on it, went to properties, clicked on local net sharing, then i clicked on Configure File Sharing, typed in the root password, and put a DOT beside the sentence that says, " Allow users to share files from there home folder, (im all mixed up about this file sharing) i know it should be just as easy to set up on linux as it is on microsoft, But i just need to know how to do it.. :( :newbie:

In yast2 there is a setup for samba. I'm assuming that you may be sharing with windows computers. You will need to set the name of the WORKGROUP for instance.

One stumbling block is if the firewall is blocking local access.

Also, you can run as root:rcsamba status to make sure that the samba service (smbd) is running.

You might take a look at /etc/samba/smb.conf. You might want post parts of this file if you still are having problems.

Also, look in /var/log/samba/ for log files that may help.

Also please check that you have 'Lisa' installed. It needs to be installed and configured before you can use 'lan:/' in the konqueror browser, or use the kde sidebar network tab to browse shares.

I have a similar situation but I'm using Debian Sarge. When I create a new folder, there is no share option in properties. I have Samba set up and can share folders/files between my WinXP boxes and my Linux boxes but I can't share folders/files between my 2 Linux boxes...go figure. I understand Samba is for crossplatform sharing and that's why that part works, but how do I share files between two Linux boxes? Thanks for any help/insight.

Yeah, I'm in the same boat as well. How do you share two linux boxes? Do I need to run Samba for this or not? This is not clear. And then someone mentioned Lisa to through more mud in the water...
