Need baseline info
 

I've been away from this for a couple years, but...

My uname -a (yields)
2.6.17-10-generic #2 SMP Tue Dec5 22:28:26 UTC 2006 I686 Linux

The reason for my absence was the inability to get the wireless to work. I realized it may have been due to the router simplicity (no WEP).
So not long ago the old router was fried and now there's a new NetGear with WEP encryption.

The system sees the PCI card, I have the network name installed and the system asks for the WEP password, but never gets together with the router.

Questions;
Is this version (Linux Mint) too old to mess around with?
I have the network name and WEP password embedded in the interfaces file. Is there another file that needs editing?

However, two questions
1. WEP is not very secure. Can you use a different security mode for your wireless?
2. Is anything preventing you from using a more recent version of MINT? You could even try out their latest liveDVD

WEP is fine where I am and yes, it is the lowest common denominator. We have 6 other systems of varying flavors of (Win)OS and hardware and they all have to work together..
Since the Linksys PCI card since is already genned into the system, I don't suppose editing the RT61.inf file and inserting the passcode will do any good.

Watching the readout from executing a ./networking stop, then start shows that DHCPDISCOVER isn't getting any 'offers'

If I download the latest version of Mint, will it size a USB wireless module? The supplied install doesn't have any info for Unix.

The Mint versions that used kernel 2.6.17 were the 2.x versions, released in 2006/2007 and unsupported for some years now. You shouldn't use those versions at all.
The newest Mint version may possibly not work on older machines in the standard configuration, what are your systems specs (CPU, RAM, video card)?
