Need An Application/protocol Monitoring Tool

Hello,

Am a linux consultant and am quite at home with things open source.

I need to deploy an open source or commercial open source app on my Linux bridge (actually a 2yr old Fedora Core 4 system configured with IMQ/iptables and working fantastic).

I have flirted with NTOP but its not close to accurate most times. What i need is a solution that can give the way applications are used on our backbone line of 15Mbps. More like LAYER 7. It shud be able to tell how email, http, https, voip, ftp etc are used. I really want it to capture voip.

The box is wrenched brw a BGP router and a cisco switch running some VLANs.

It would really help if the solution is web based or client/server.

Am testing out wireshark now to know if it can.

Thanks

D.

I'm not as knowledgeable in network traffic as you seem to be, but have you given thought to packet analyzers like Ethereal(aka. Wireshark)? What about netstat (exploring it with all of the different options)?

i know of ethereal sorry Wireshark but its in a resident client form, i need something more like mrtg/cacti that can perform the functions i want.

The things i need is that it should be a web based app or or least in a client/server form. But web app will be more universal.

It should be able to display in graph form, the realtime usage of the ip protocol stack of its hosts system/gateway.

It should be able to show me the percentage usage of IP protocols such as FTP,HTTP,SMTP,KAZAA,DNS etc

A good app i found was NTOP but it doesnt report well the stats so i need something more performance driven.

Pls drop any ideas for me

d.
