Need a modem to connect to sound card (line in/out)

Hello fellow netizens,

I have an Asus Eeepc 701 4g. My motherboard has the solder pads and connector for an MDC connector for the modem. Soldering the connector is not a problem; I have already soldered a mini PCI express connector to the board.

What I would like to do is connect the modem to the notebook's audio (in and out). The Eeepc uses Realtek audio (RMC ALC662 chip is the audio chip I believe). I could use a portable, external modem if necessary.

Here is a quote from http://www.linmodems.org/:
Quote:

Russ Nelson writes: A lot of people claim that a Winmodem has no place in a Linux box. I disagree. There are many applications for a Winmodem if you stop thinking of it as a modem, and start thinking of it as a telephone interface:

* Think telephone emulation (put the audio card into full duplex, and talk to the linmodem with it).
* Think telephone with a backspace key (use the linmodem to dial for you).
* Think smart telephone: "That line is busy. Do you want me to retry in five minutes?"
* Think "voice dialling".
* Think "soft pbx". Equip enough machines in an office for all the outside lines. Then do IP telephone inter-office, and go to a linmodem when you need an outside line.
* Think answering machine.
* Think pager interface. (Your answering machine takes the call, phones your pager company and pages you).
* Think "contact database with integral dialler, and answering machine recognition".
* Think "call recording with no off-hook click".
* Think message detail recorder (basically a record of all time spent on the phone. Great for billing).

None of these require more CPU than a 386.
Is all of this possible with current Linmodem (ie. Linuxant) drivers? I browsed through the site but couldn't find details on drivers with voice support.

I've been scurrying around the web for answers, but I haven't found much. There is an SGI machine driver which is essentially a software modem (no modem hardware required); I will try and get it to build but I'm not holding my breath.

Is there a shorter route to a solution? Ie.:

Linux modem <--> audio <--> Linux modem

Thank you in advance for any tips or helpful comments.
Timothy.

I found a driver; I will test it

After a little more digging I have found a Linux port of the aforementioned SGI audio modem. The person who ported it reports it is working at certain speeds. I'll see if I can get it to compile and hold a connection.

However, for the sake of reliability, I would much prefer to have a hardware modem/Linmodem with a well supported driver.

Suggestions, anyone?

Regards,
Timothy
