NAS work with LVM ?

I'm researching the best way to add massive amounts of storage to some web front end servers, with the capability of adding raid5 drive setups as needed to a single storage volume. I know LVM would handle this on it's own, but ideally I'd like to also be able to add multiple machines to this setup as well, so the scaling can go until I max out networking equipment.

Does anyone have any experience with the feasibility of this? Or maybe I'm going the wrong route alltogether. I'm trying to setup a free online file storage system. Configuring multiple web httpd and database servers is already within my realm of experience, however getting the file storage to scale massively is something I need to figure out.

Any help would be appreciated.

LVM on Linux is pretty much the same as on HP-UX. At a prior job we did NAS (NetApps) on LVM on HP-UX. I'd say it is possible. We also used the NetApps filers on RedHat there but I don't recall using LVM for it. I would say any disk you can present to Linux can be used for LVM or RAID.

Another option is SAN rather than NAS. Personally I prefer SAN and we do use that on our RedHat AS 3 running Oracle RAC at my current job.
