nas which one between qnap ts-219p+ and synology ds211+
Hi,
I looking into getting a NAS solution. I've narrowed it down to the following two models:
QNAP TS-219p+
Synology DS211+
I was reading in a couple of reviews that the Synology although it is very nice it does not have good read/write speeds from/to linux client machines (e.g. http://www.anandtech.com/show/4195/s...b-nas-review/7
or http://forum.synology.com/enu/viewto...rt=135#p139911)
Couldn't find anything good or bad regarding communication with linux clients about the QNAP.
Does anyone have any experience with any of them?
Thanks.

Hi,
i use QNAP TS219-Pro+ since february and i'm pleased about nearly all features provided.
I installed 2 disks a' 2TB size (be aware Samsung Ecopoint F4 requires a firemware update to work correct), RAID initialization took 6-7 hours. User/Service configuration took an additional hour to do.
I have 7 clients using the storage. Write performance on NFS is around 35-42MB/s, read 65MB/s, samba somewhat slower (i only have 1 windows machine here). I use automounted NFS home directory and cannot find any differences to a local home directory.
For my ESXi installation i use ISCSI and NFS for storage, where performance is nearly the same.
Twonkymedia server works well for my Clients. A nice feature on QNAP is the possibility to install additional sofftware via qpkg.
I should mention that i never used a Synology NAS.

I don't have one but have looked into it. I think you may find that setting up the more advanced features would be reasons one would choose this over a simple nas.
The embedded systems tend to be a good solution to things like freenas. It is sometimes hard to beat a single purpose device.

True indeed. Due to space contraints I am not even looking at freenas alike solutions.
