named is making lots of spurious connections - why?

Just found out one of my DNS servers is attempting to make lots of connections to root nameservers. One port that named is using shows up with these connections. I suspect that the spawned process is stuck, but I haven't seen this happen before. Suspect that restarting named or rebooting the VM will clear the problem, but I wanted to run this past the community to see if someone has had this happen and found a root cause.

Thanks to all for looking!

Does these spurious connections come back after a couple of days?

Hasn't so far. These show up as blocked IP spoofs at my firewalls, so I'll know pretty quick if it comes back.

It could happen during configuration change. If it doesn't come back after reboot, this could be reason.

The firewall has stopped reporting the IP spoofs from the nameserver. Restarting named seems to have fixed it.

Thanks!
