I am trying to setup a dns server on my box. Is named the way to go about it? If so how do I configure it?

Yes, named is a DNS Server you could use for that purpose. Which linux distribution do you use? If you use RedHat you can set up most of it using the RPM files bind and bind-devel, which can be found on the 1st / 2nd CD-ROM.

Bind is a VAST subject, and you're not going to get anyway asking how to set up it, as there can be so much to it. read those docs, and the howto at tldp.org

check out http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/DNS-HOWTO.html to setup a caching nameserver. I followed that to setup named and it worked very nicely.

if you are looking for a setup tool, try webmin:

http://www.webmin.com/

but it is pretty neat to do the configuration using an editor.

Checkout the DNS Howto, it will give you all the basics.
If you're looking for more advanced help, I would suggest buying the book DNS and Bind from O'Reilly.
It really helped me.

Might I suggest djbdns? I couldn't believe how easy it was to setup a cacheing extrenal server. Haven't tried a DNS server yet, but it doesn't look too difficult.
