Unhappy name resolution problem

whenever I attempt to contact my machine by it's name(tyhoid.school.edu) I can't do anything. I can do whatever I want via it's ip address (10.162.8.184), and I can surf the web and ping all machines on my domain. So it is obviously is getting an ip address from the school's DHCP server, but the school's dns server isn't making an entry for the machine. I've run netconfig like a hundred times and I'm out of ideas here's some output...if you need any further information let me know

root@typhoid:/# ifconfig
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:C0:F0:17:88:93
inet addr:10.162.8.184 Bcast:10.162.11.255 Mask:255.255.252.0
UP BROADCAST NOTRAILERS RUNNING MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:3006 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:241 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:100
Interrupt:11 Base address:0xfc00

lo Link encap:Local Loopback
inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0
UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:3924 Metric:1
RX packets:18 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:18 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:0

root@typhoid:/# cat /etc/resolv.conf
domain school.edu
nameserver 10.162.8.2
search school.edu

TIA,

Seth Kramer

You need to edit the hosts file and put it in there

bash-2.05$ cat /etc/hosts
# Do not remove the following line, or various programs
# that require network functionality will fail.
127.0.0.1 Alpha localhost.localdomain localhost
10.0.0.2 winme winme.home winme
11.0.0.2 win98 win98.home win98
