Name Resolution

simple question, may be a no-brainer but I have to ask. I now have my house running under a Libranet server. I also have another linux box as a workstation. Every computer in the house uses a local range of 192.168.0.0/255. I use wins for name resolution and the Libranet box runs samba as a wins server.

the question is: How do you configure the linux workstation to use WINS? I set up samba and it work great i.e. (sbm://computername/c$) that works but if I drop to a prompt and ping computername(1 of 10) I get ping: unknown host? why.

192.168.0.0/255 does not make sense... you presumably mean either 192.168.0.0/24 or 192.168.0.0/255.255.255.0 as they are equivalent.

eitherway. Linux doesn't use wins name resolution as it's a totally M$ invention that is not needed. there are a few samba offshoots that appear to do this though. http://www.advogato.org/proj/winbind/ but i'd do the honest thing and not use it, using a dns server instead. wins might be simple, but it sucks.
