Question My VPN connects, but my browsers (chromium, Firefox) will not

Hello and thanks for helping!

I am rather new to Linux and have recently (after much trial and error) settled into Ubuntu 12.04.3 LTS with dual boot Windows 7.

I had decided to attempt to use my pre-existing VPN "Private Internet Access" using the "Ubuntu Linux 12.04: OpenVPN via Network Manager Setup" from this page: https://www.privateinternetaccess.co...nvpn_installer (I followed the steps to the letter)

It appears that all has worked and my network successfully connects to the VPN. However, neither of my browsers (chromium or firefox) will connect to the internet while I have the VPN connected! There are many threads out there with a similar issue but no solution has worked for me (some threads actually end with the conclusion that there is no solution).

It would be greatly appreciated if anyone with knowledge of this topic could try and assist me. I am not an advanced user but I am also not computer illiterate and would be more than happy to provide any additional details requested and follow any suggestions that come my way.

Thanks again.

Can you describe your network configuration and show your route table? Show the outputs of:

Code:
route -n
ifconfig -a

not sure how ubuntu configures openvpn or how "Private Internet Access" configures their end, but i'm not seeing a tunneling or bridge adapter in your ifconfig... are you sure openvpn is running? the following should show you a result of any current openvpn processes:

Code:
ps aux | grep openvpn
what exactly makes you think that the openvpn is truly connected? for example, can you ping the VPN server's IP?

also, maybe post your openvpn config file (for a client, typically /etc/openvpn/client.conf, but naming could vary)

I finally got it to work. I essentially re-did everything from the beginning again. I was having a problem with a failure to connect due to the "invalid VPN secrets" but then I tried a different location (hostname) with a higher amount of servers and bandwidth and now it seems to work.

I appreciate the support and I will be sure to donate as I will probably use this site again in the future!

Thanks!
