To transfer files to your Windows pc from the Mandrake box, the quickest way will be to use pscp.exe which is on the same website as PuTTY.
PuTTY is the ssh client for windows at
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~s.../download.html

Pscp.exe is a secure copy program used to copy files from one machine to another through SSH.

The alternative would be to configure windows file sharing using the www.samba.org package.

Use Very secure FTP of your linux......

1. Service vsftpd status ( let it be on or off.....we'll restart it later on)
2. vi /etc/vsftpd.ftpusers ( we are editing this file)

Comment the line where "root" is written, commenting it means... earlier it was like "root" make it now "#root"
( its human readable... You'll understand wht are you doing )

Press "escape " then " : " & then "q" .. you'll come back to your prompt.
( you are saving your changes n quiting it )

3. vi /etc/vsftpd.user_list

Again comment the like where " root " is written.

Save it the way we did earlier... come back to your prompt.

4. service vsftp restart

5. Its all set, now you can run any ftp client from your windows box to the ip of your Mandrake box & use the root & its password for login to ftp.

6. You'll get all the mandrake drives over to your FTP client.........copy whtever you feel like.

As if i am not using MANDRAKE n dont have much idea abt it also........ So any1 who's reading it find some file / service location or names wrong ... do post a reply with correct options. This user will be thankful to us.

Go ahead n explore the awesome unseen........

No on the Windows machine use putty to login to the Linux machine and transfer the files. Also you'll also find these GUI Windows programs allow you to connect to your Linux box, if you'd prefer not to use putty's command line interface:
http://www.ssh.com/support/downloads...ommercial.html
http://winscp.net/eng/index.php

If you want to setup network file shares you can easily access shares on your Windows box on Mandrake by using smb4k (see the menus) or the share mounting GUI in the Mandrake Control Centre->Mount Points.

tkedwards is right on.

I probably should have mentioned... An SSH server is usually installed and configured on linux by default. Basically copy the pscp.exe program to your windows box in a directory that you can navigate to using the command line, say "C:\temp" or whatever. Then open the Command Prompt, (Click Start - Run - type "cmd" - press "Enter". )
"cd" to the directory where you copied pscp.exe and then simply type "pscp"
It will give you an example of how to use it and some brief help info.

This should be the fastest way for you to accomplish your objective. Setting up vsftpd or samba is fine but I would not waste time configuring services when your just going to reinstall the OS anyway.
Good Luck
