My network-based activities are slower than XP!

Hello,

I know that many people have posted a very similar question, but I have yet to see a solution that applies to me. I am running a dual boot system on an IBM R31 thinkpad. Windows XP/Mandrake 10 (community edition). I almost always use a wireless connection and the sad fact is that all my network activities eg. samba/ftp/ssh/www etc... run slower (sometimes MUCH slower) on Linux than they do on Windows. On Linux, I have tried mozilla, firefox, konqueror, and netscape navigator. Firefox is hideously slow and the rest are just slow. Opening and refreshing the contents of a network drive on campus takes longer, as well as saving to it. Everything just seems slow compared to XP. This is not what I expected, given Linux's high-performance repuation, so I think something must be wrong with my setup. Oh, and just to avoid the inevitable, my DNS resolution seems to be working fine. Thanks for any help.

I think <-- Probally Shouldn't say this --> It may be the Distro that you are using. Mandrake out of the box comes pretty bloated to try and make it as user friendly as possible. I Dual boot With W2K and Red Hat 8, of Course Redhat 8 Runs better compared to win2k. I am not moving to winXP anytime soon So I really can't comment if RedHat would run faster or better than XP. If you are not lock into that distro of linux I would try other flavors like Red Hat, Slackware, Debian and others.
